Tuscany
A collection of images from a September 2018 visit to Tuscany starting in Florence from which we drove thoughout the region visiting many of the historic walled hill towns. These walled hill towns included San Miniato, San Gimignano, known as "the Town of Fine Towers" unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses which with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form an unforgettable skyline. From San Gimignano we drove to Volterra another walled mountaintop town dating from before the 7th century BC. We then drove to Colle di Val d'Elsa a nearby atmospheric medieval village and on to Monteriggioni through the cultivated Tuscan vineyards. We made a brief stop in Siena and its Il Campo, the loveliest of Italian squares. Our next stop was at Monte Olivetto Maggiore a Benedictine monastery with russet-coloured brick buildings. We then drove to Greve in Chianti and on to Cortona and then Montepulciano one of the highest Tuscan hill-towns. We then left Tuscany and stopped overnight in Assisi before proceeding to Rome for 2 days, visiting St Paul's Basilica "outside the city" and other sites before catching our flight home.
