Antelope Canyon

Antelope Canyon, located on Navajo land in Northern Arizona, is a “slot” canyon formed by erosion of the sandstone due to flash flooding and natural rainwater rushing through narrow passageways. These passageways are eroded over the course of years to form deep corridors and hard edges are smoothed to form flowing shapes. Within Antelope Canyon there are two distinct canyons each with its own characteristics. Upper Antelope Canyon named by the Navajo as Tsé bighánílíní, "the place where water runs through rocks" is known for its rich colours and light beams from openings at the top of the canyon refracting off the sculpted walls of the canyon. Lower Antelope Canyon called Hazdistazí, or "spiral rock arches" by the Navajo comprises a series of narrow arches with deeply sculpted walls
